Carter Hinson's mom, NICU nurse, showing us the tiny diapers used by premature babies. Ava's mom showing how to care for a swimming pool. My husband, Lee, retired aircraft mechanic. Derek's mom works at SIU-Edwardsville! Derek's grandma is showing some soap she makes. We shared the feast with all of second grade, some from each class eating in each room. Hide the turkey so he can't be found! Below, build a table that will hold all the Thanksgiving food.

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! We searched through the sand with toothbrushes to find 21 dinosaur eggs (Skittles), which we placed in 7 cups, three in each cup. Guess what! 3 x 7 = 21! We used the playdough that many of you made and sent in (thank you!) to see how things can make an impression and become a fossil. Claude Monet was our artist of the month. Besides looking at copies of his best known works and reading books about him, the kids had the opportunity to match cards with his paintings, and to mix colors like he did to create our own works of art! Happy Thanksgiving, 2nd Grade! We had a great pre-Thanksgiving week, making Pilgrim hats and Native American headbands, researching and presenting in small groups on Thanksgiving topics like cornucopia, Plymouth, Mayflower, feast, and clothing of the Pilgrims. We cleaned, steamed, peeled, and mashed 6 cooking pumpkins on Monday, then mixed that with milk, sugar, eggs, and spices (thanks so much to those who sent ingredients) and made pumpkin pudding. This was shared with all of second grade, who shared dressing, fruit salad, and cookies that looked like turkeys. It made for a wonderful feast! Thanks also to those who sent plates and napkins. Halloween Party! Thank you so much to those who sent party treats, take-home treats, or came to help with the party! We had a great time! Today we learned about Elvis, watched a video of him singing "Hound Dog," and tried dancing like him, too! We learned one of his favorite foods was a peanut butter and banana sandwich. We then made our own to form an array of our new multiplication fact, 3 x 3 = 9 Painting Monet's water lilies (and bridges)Cahokia Mounds Field Trip We all made it up all those steps to the top of Monk's Mound! You can see a long way from up there! We will learn several multiplication facts this year, through poems, stories, chants, or activities. We have already learned that 8 x 8 = 64,and this week, we dug for dinosaur eggs (Skittles) which we put into 7 cups, 3 per cup. So..... 7 x 3 = 21 dinosaur eggs! We then had some (clean) Skittles to eat! Here are some pictures of the action..... Each group of two or three students chose a way to present their information to the class. They worked for several days to decide what information to present and to get ready. We had a poem, a poster, a puppet show, and six plays. They were all a little different, and all enjoyable and informative. It was emphasized that learning occurs when you investigate and collect facts yourself, as well as when you play to teach others. |
